A noted overseas physician writes in The Lancet, a British medical journal, to ask: “Why are there no good treatments for diabetic neuropathy?” (Neuropathy involves symptoms of numbness, tingling and pain from inflammation and nerve damage.) [ The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology August 2014] Diabetics frequently experience neuropathy in their peripheral nerves (legs, arms), their retina (retinopathy) and kidneys (nephropathy).

Like so many online journalists these days, they read a press release issued by a health agency or a medical group but not the actual published scientific study referred to in the news report.

The lack of major news media coverage of possibly the biggest government whistleblower revelation since disclosure of the Tuskegee Experiment in 1972 suggests more than fraud at the highest levels of the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) as well as major vaccine makers, it suggests the nation’s news agencies are complicit in portraying a government view that there is no link between vaccination and the unexplained rise of autism.

4 days ago At a recent knowledge share fair in Arusha, I was tasked with introducing participants to the idea of starting an East Africa Global Health.

People listened poliy and a few nodded in agreement, but why would or should this East African audience actually be interested in a regional EA GHKC? Three reasons: context; knowledge equity; and impact. The intention was to generate some enthusiasm for an affiliate group of the current Global Health Knowledge Collaborative (GHKC), which is a community of knowledge management (KM) global health professionals in the States have been benefitting from mutual collaboration for several years. At a recent knowledge share fair in Arusha, I was tasked with introducing participants to the idea of starting an East Africa Global Health Knowledge Collaborative (EA GHKC).

West African countries have the highest fertility rates in the world, with an average of 5.5 births per woman; they also have the lowest levels of contraceptive use.

What does this mean? Well, imagine that you are a district health manager.

If you work in international public health, you’re probably passionate about what you do, and also want your work to have an impact on peoples’ lives.

Developed and launched a global Web-based portal that brings together databases with extensive resources related to family planning, reproductive health, HIV prevention, and other health-related topics.

This dynamic online community provides virtual collaboration space for over 14,600 health professionals from 7,125 different organizations in 190 countries. K4Health manages a rapidly growing network of reproductive health professionals who use the Implementing Best Practices (IBP) Knowledge Gateway ( www.knowledge-gateway.org ).

We work to advance the use of quality information to improve public health programs worldwide.

Knowledge for Health (K4Health) is a knowledge management project led by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, in partnership.

The K4Health mission is to increase the use and dissemination of evidence-based, accurate and up-to-date information in order to improve health service delivery and health outcomes worldwide. Knowledge for Health (K4Health) is a knowledge management project led by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, in partnership with FHI 360 and Management Sciences for Health.

FHI 360 has been a program partner in the production of e-toolkits — electronic libraries of the latest, evidence-based information on topics related to family planning and reproductive health, including community-based family planning, community-based access to injectable contraceptives, family planning and HIV integration, microbicides and research utilization.

At the country level, FHI 360 helps analyze local health information needs and opportunities and facilitates local knowledge networks in conjunction with ministries of health and with divisions of reproductive health and family planning.

FHI 360 also co-founded and co-chairs the mHealth Working Group, maintains the mHealth Toolkit and contributes to research and evidence in this emerging, rapidly evolving practice that uses mobile and wireless technologies to support achievement of health objectives.

K4Health is the “go-to” project for up-to-date, evidence-based information connecting health and development professionals through virtual networks and online discussions that facilitate knowledge sharing and exchange.
