Here we provide information on medication used for mental health illnesses to help patients make an informed decision about their medicines.

Patients can use this site on their own or together with family, a carer, a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. The trust's Choice and Medication website offers information about medications used for mental health illnesses to help people make informed decisions about the medicines they need.

On the Choice and Medication website you'll useful information on:

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) approves which medicines can be prescribed to patients.

The list of approved medication we can prescribe for mental health conditions is called a 'formulary'.

They also carry out 'technology appraisals' which give recommendations on the use of new and existing medicines and treatments within the NHS. The NHS is legally obliged to fund and resource medicines and treatments recommended by NICE's technology appraisals.

In this section there are links to websites (both internal and external) with useful patient information about medication and how the various medicines work. It includes links to the Trust approved Choice and Medication website that contains a comprehensive range of psychotropic medication information leaflets and comparative information comparing similar medicines.

As well as standard patient-friendly information leaflets in question and answer format, for many medicines there are also simplified leaflets with pictorial aids that are suitable for younger adolescents and people with a lower reading ability.
