There are currently over 300 medications and dosage forms that the FDA requires a Medication Guide be dispensed with.

ASHP is the national professional organization whose more than 40,000 members include pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians who serve as patient care providers on healthcare teams in acute and ambulatory settings.

The guides address issues that are specific to particular drugs and drug classes, and they contain FDA-approved information that can help patients avoid serious adverse events. Medication Guides are paper handouts that come with many prescription medicines.

We chose to create such a system using open source tools and RxNorm - the. Service (AHFS) (American Society of Health Pharmacists, Bethesda, MD).

The matching results are shown in Table 1. There were 3,694 (7.7%) terms that remained unmatched, 1,954 of which were unique. Of the 15.2% of tokens that did not match exactly, Metaphone matched an additional 3.1% to generic drugs and 4.2% to trade names. There were 460 distinct trade names found. The Hints List accounted for 11.2% of the total matches. Of the 59,582 tokens in the set, 11,341 tokens were ignored (19%) and 48,241 were further evaluated.

Errors rates were estimated for the Validation Set as follows:

Generic names had to be matched before trade names, and raw tokens before their Metaphone encodings.

These concepts are listed under vocabulary_id 33 and have relationship and ancestry relationships to the RxNorm concepts that are part of their definitions.
