The common medication for strep throat includes antibiotics such as penicillin or cephalosporins combined with symptom relievers.

Before administering any medication, it is important to discuss it with a medical health care professional and to read the label directions for each drug. It is not recommended to administer aspirin to teenagers and young children because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome, a dangerous illness. In addition to an antibiotic treatment, your doctor may prescribe over-the-counter medication for strep throat such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve the symptoms.

The medication for strep throat can also prevent the bacteria from causing your immune system to attack itself.
