CR tabs 6.25mg—100; 12.5mg—100, 500; tabs 5mg—100; 10mg—100, 500.

CNS effects, complex sleep-related behaviors (eg, sleep-driving), headache, next-day somnolence, dizziness, diarrhea, dry mouth; anaphylaxis, angioedema, others (see full labeling).

Depression. Withdraw gradually. Nursing mothers: not recommended. Write ℞ for smallest practical amount. Increased risk of next-day psychomotor impairment. Evaluate for co-morbid diagnoses before initiation. Labor & delivery. Abnormal thinking and behavioral changes. Sleep apnea. Pregnancy (Cat.C). Myasthenia gravis. Compromised respiratory function. Elderly. Debilitated. Drug or alcohol abuse. Reevaluate if insomnia persists after 7–10 days of use.

Decreased alertness with imipramine, chlorpromazine. Concomitant other sedative-hypnotics including other zolpidem products: not recommended. May be antagonized by CYP3A4 inducers (eg, rifampin). May potentiate CNS depression with alcohol, other CNS depressants (eg, benzodiazepines, opioids, tricyclics). May be potentiated by CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole), sertraline.

Generic Name and Formulations: Zolpidem tartrate 5mg, 10mg; tabs. Company: Sanofi Aventis Insomnia.

Initially 5mg (in women), and 5mg or 10mg (in men) at bedtime (take only if able to get 7–8hrs of sleep before becoming active again). AMBIEN CR Imidazopyridine hypnotic. Use lowest effective dose. <18yrs: not recommended. Effect delayed if taken with a meal. Elderly, debilitated, or hepatic insufficiency: 5mg once daily at bedtime. Both: if 5mg dose ineffective, may increase to max 10mg.

Only 4 drugs may be compared at once.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is notifying the public of Information for Patients and Providers · Information by Drug Class for certain drugs containing zolpidem (Ambien, Ambien CR, Edluar, and Zolpimist).

FDA has prepared a list of questions and answers to provide an additional overview of this safety issue.

Drowsiness is already listed as a common side effect in the drug labels of all insomnia drugs, along with warnings that patients may still feel drowsy the day after taking these products. Patients who take insomnia drugs can experience impairment of mental alertness the morning after use, even if they feel fully awake.
