Trazodone Common sleep drug is little-known antidepressant

What are the top prescribed drugs for insomnia—Ambien? Lunesta? Yes, but there's another: a nearly 30-year-old generic antidepressant called trazodone.

Of course, medication is sometimes needed for persistent insomnia-when nondrug treatment is refused, unavailable, or ineffective, or when the sleep disturbance is debilitating. Here are the main drug options:.

In addition, many physicians apparently think that trazodone is safer than other frequently prescribed sleep medications. But whether that's correct is not clear. While trazodone is rarely used to treat depression alone any more, it's widely prescribed, off-label, at lower doses for treating insomnia, for several likely reasons.

I need to know the interaction, cross tolerance between Lunesta

Lunesta trazodone
I need to know the interaction, cross tolerance between Lunesta

Specifically, my Lunesta has not seemed to have worked as well since I have. Dr Thomas, What do you think about taking Trazodone and Lunesta together?.

What do you recommend after that? Complete cessation?. That appears to be a short term benzo medication. You mentioned Halcion to replace Lunesta.

So, you are saying that it is okay to take Lunesta and Clomazepam together (other than the sleepiness issue)? The Clonazepam doesn't necessarily affect the tolerance of the Lunesta? The Lunesta tolerance is just due to the amount of time and frequency I have been taking it?

For tachyphylaxis, if Lunesta affects the neurotransmitter (for sleep) and the medication stop working, can you still sleep while tapering off Lunesta? Can you replace Lunesta with something else?

If Lunesta is not working, could I take/rotate an Over the Counter sleep aid (i.e., Valerian, Tylenol PM, antihistamine ) with it that targets different neurotransmitters to help with sleep while tapering?. I do have one other question I would hope you could answer? I know Lunesta targets a certain neurotransmitter. You have been very helpful. I am seeing my sleep specialist on Thursday to discuss taper options.

I really do appreciate any input you can give me. I have been struggling with forums since last week and they haven't helped as much as you have today.
