NAMI Ativan (lorazepam)

Do not stop taking lorazepam without talking to your healthcare provider first. Stopping lorazepam abruptly may result in one or more of the following withdrawal.

Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine. It is approved for the treatment of anxiety, status epilepticus (continuous seizures), and as a medication given right before anesthesia. However, benzodiazepines are also commonly used to treat difficulty sleeping and alcohol withdrawal.

If you take the medication everyday (instead of ‘as needed’), use a calendar, pillbox, alarm clock, or cell phone alert to help you remember to take it. You may also ask a family member or friend to remind you or check in with you to be sure you are taking your medication.

Injection: 2 mg/ml, 4 mg/ml.

What other medications may interact with Ativan ?

Medications you have taken in the past for your condition, whether they were effective or caused any adverse effects.

Watch and learn about your health.

Most people who have taken a benzodiazepine or Z drug can successfully come off it. Go at a pace that is comfortable for you after discussion with your doctor. However, some people take up to a year to reduce the dose gradually before finally stopping it. For many people, the gradual withdrawal and eventual stopping of diazepam takes several months. After switching to diazepam (described above), the pace and speed of withdrawal varies greatly from person to person.
