Generally speaking, the greatest strength of Apple's iOS, the operating system on the iPad and iPad mini, is twofold: It's very clean and intuitive, and the wide selection of iPad apps that you can buy right on your tablet—more than 500,000 iPad-specific titles at the time of this writing—work uniformly well with very few exceptions.

Right now, though, you can only find KitKat on a few models including Google's own Nexus-branded tablets, some Samsung Galaxy Tabs, and the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition.

While the iPad wasn't the first tablet ever invented, its sleek design and successful marketing quickly made it the year's must-have item for gadget lovers, and the tremendous popularity of the iPad and iPad 2 has helped to make tablets the fastest growing segment of the personal computer market. The tablet computer market has come a long way since Apple introduced the iPad in early 2010.

The Motorola Xoom is just one tablet on the market today from at least a dozen different manufacturers, including Apple, BlackBerry and Samsung.
