Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine drug having anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, amnestic, sedative.. Synonyms of this drug are Klonopin and rivotril.

Long-term effects of benzodiazepines include tolerance, benzodiazepine dependence, and benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, which occurs in one third of patients treated with clonazepam for longer than four weeks. Clonazepam has an intermediate onset of action, with a peak blood level occurring one to four hours after oral administration.

Caution is also required if clonazepam is used during breast feeding. The safety profile of clonazepam during pregnancy is less clear than that of other benzodiazepines, and if benzodiazepines are indicated during pregnancy, chlordiazepoxide and diazepam may be a safer choice.
