No, it is not an opioid or "narcotic". It is not even a controlled substance. It can impair function though so you want to be sure how you react to the medicine before you drive or operate heavy machinery. It is classed as an antidepressant.

I thought I read somewhere it has a narcotic component in it.

Actually, it is sometimes used as a treatment FOR akathesia. Trazodone is a tricylic antidepressant that is often used for sleep, not addictive, works well, and often leaves people with something of a "hangover" or sedated feeling for the first few days or week that they use it. Trazodone has a sedative effect, unlike the restlessness of akathesia. In 27 years of psych nursing, never once have I heard of anyone experiencing akathesia from trazodone. Methadone is as addictive as heroin, and the withdrawals are just as bad - the half life is longer, I believe.

It is also used to reduce the symptoms of agoraphobia, drug induced insomnia, essential tremor, repetitive screaming, and some pain syndromes. Trazodone can be used in the treatment of any type of depression.
