About 9 million Americans rely on sleeping pills or some sort of sedative to doze off at night, and 11% of middle-aged women take anti-anxiety.

The interaction remained even after the scientists adjusted for potential confounding effect on Alzheimer’s rates such as blood pressure, heart disease, depression and insomnia. Previous studies have linked the drugs to memory and cognitive problems, but primarily in those taking them short term. But in the current study, in which the scientists, led by Sophie Billioti de Gage, a PhD student at INSERM, University of Bordeaux, followed the participants for six years, the connection to dementia appeared strong.

But, she added, “It seems crucial to encourage physicians to carefully balance the benefits and risks when initiating or renewing a treatment.

Long-term use of pills for anxiety and sleep problems may be linked to Alzheimer's, research suggests. A study of older Canadian adults found.

Prof Guy Goodwin, president of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, said the findings "could mean that the drugs cause the disease, but is more likely to mean that the drugs are being given to people who are already ill"

Despite published guidance on their appropriate use for short-term management, inappropriate prescribing of the drugs is still a concern.

NHS guidelines say the drugs should be used for eight to 12 weeks at most.

"Unwarranted long-term use of these drugs should be considered as a public health concern."
