The four-cylinder’s variable valve timing is now electrically driven instead of oil-driven, which combines with other minor tuning tricks to improve cold-start performance and move the horsepower and torque peaks lower in the rev range for enhanced drivability. If you bother to compare the 2015 2.4-liter Sonata’s specs to last year’s 2.4, you might notice that there’s been a downgrade in power. Yet there’s much more to this story. The direct-injected four-cylinder now makes 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, 5 fewer horsepower and 1 lb-ft less than last year.

A five-speed manual was standard (GL only for 2006) and a four-speed automatic was optional with this engine. For 2008, the four-cylinder became standard on all trim levels and the V6 became optional. Optional on the GLS and standard on the LX, SE and Limited was a 235-hp version of the 3.3-liter V6, matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. That year also saw a few more standard features added to the SE and Limited trims. Originally, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder produced 162 hp and was standard on the GL and GLS trims.

Styling was ever so slightly different, while they lack standard driver-selectable steering effort and the availability of certain features like xenon headlights and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-size sedan that is a rival for best sellers like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima.

EPA highway ratings rated up to 35 mpg for the base model, while a Sonata Hybrid, with a lithium-polymer pack and even higher ratings, was also introduced and achieved up to 40 mpg. However, the Sonata Hybrid was one of a set of vehicles found to have overstated fuel-economy numbers. On a confirmation check of several vehicles, the EPA found the Sonata Hybrid's actual tested fuel economy to be 34/39 mpg or 36 mpg combined.
