The inability to sleep can drive people to try anything – even buying drugs like Imovane from street dealers. The need for sleep is one of humankind’s greatest unavoidable cravings. Health professionals suggest a more gradual approach to detoxification that is often best accomplished in specially equipped inpatient addiction rehabilitation programs. This medically supervised detox can take anywhere from a few days to multiple months to complete.

It is sold in Canada, Australia, Norway and Russia. Although it is not currently commercially available in the United States, the active ingredient is used in the heavily advertised sleeping aid Lunesta. In Europe, this same chemical is sold under the name Zimavone. Imovane is the brand name of zopiclone, a prescription hypnotic drug that is classified as a non-benzodiazepine sleeping medication. It was originally believed to be less prone to abuse and addiction than benzodiazepines, but many in the medical establishment have been changing their mind about this drug in the last few years.

For this reason, doctors do not recommend using the medication for more than a couple of days at a time. This causes a general slowing, or sedation, of brain activity, which allows some people with major sleep problems to fall asleep and to stay asleep. Psychologically, he or she may fear the return of painful and stressful insomnia. As the user’s brain gets used to the effects of the drug, the user can become both physically and psychologically dependent on it. Although the drug does not work in the same way as a benzodiazepine, Imovane has very similar effects in the brain. It boosts the efficacy of the neural transmitter GABA in the central nervous system. Physically, the user may require a continuous supply in order to sleep at all.

Other side effects of Imovane abuse include the following:. One of the most troubling effects of Imovane is its amnesic properties. In this way, the drug behaves similarly to the infamous date-rape drug Rohypnol.
