The Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of MLA evaluates websites based on the following criteria: credibility, sponsorship/authorship, content, audience, currency, disclosure, purpose, links, design, interactivity, and disclaimers. The following websites have been deemed particularly useful (in each area, sites are listed in alphabetical, NOT ranked, order).

MLA's Cancer Librarians Section website has tips on evaluating websites, additional recommended websites, and a list of patient cancer libraries in the US and Canada.

Call your local hospital, health care center, medical school, or search in the Health Library Directory from MedlinePlus, a service of the US National Library of Medicine. Need more information? Try asking a medical librarian (note that not all medical libraries are open to the public).

What are the best websites for finding reliable health information on the Internet? I usually do a Google search on a symptom, drug or health.

In the future, expect to see your insurance premiums go down if you agree to have your retina scanned when you go to the gym and wear a device that measures how much oxygen you have flowing through your blood to make sure you aren't just sitting on that exercise bike reading a book. A website called HealthPrize collects daily compliance data from users, verifies their prescription refills, and rewards them for adherence with prizes. Employers are already implementing programs that reward workers with prizes and low health care premiums for maintaining a health lifestyle, such as Virgin's Healthmiles program.

We can do our own research and ask our doctors more questions.
