Later hypercalcemia may result in pruritus, mental confusion, coma, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, metastatic calcification, and renal insufficiency manifested by polyuria, nocturia, polydipsia, and proteinuria. Early signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia include headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, constipation, abdominal cramps, dry mouth, weakness, fatigue, muscle and bone pain, ataxia, tinnitus, and vertigo.

As well as its needed effects, cholecalciferol (the active ingredient contained in Vitamin D3) may cause unwanted side effects that require medical attention.

Blood levels are described either as nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) or nanomoles per liter (nmol/L), where 0.4 ng/mL = 1 nmol/L. Levels below 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL) are too low for bone or overall health, and levels above 125 nmol/L (50 ng/mL) are probably too high. Because vitamin D can come from sun, food, and supplements, the best measure of one’s vitamin D status is blood levels of a form known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Levels of 50 nmol/L or above (20 ng/mL or above) are sufficient for most individuals.

Of the two forms of vitamin D -- vitamin D-2 and D-3 -- vitamin D-3 is the form found in animals. Vitamin D-3 can come from sun exposure -- your skin cells make it.

As a result, moderate vitamin D-3 levels benefit your health, but too much can cause adverse side effects. Vitamin D-3 can come from sun exposure -- your skin cells make it when you’re exposed to ultraviolet light -- but it is also the major form of vitamin D found in vitamin supplements. Your body can’t excrete excess vitamin D-3, so if you regularly take large doses of vitamin D-3 you can develop a toxic accumulation of the nutrient. Of the two forms of vitamin D -- vitamin D-2 and D-3 -- vitamin D-3 is the form found in animals.

The high levels of calcium in your blood caused by vitamin D-3 can begin to form deposits in the walls of your heart and the lining of your blood vessels -- a process called calcification.

You should contact your physician or seek treatment at an emergency room, to make certain you are not experiencing dangerous abnormal rhythms. The NHLBI reminds patients that an arrhythmia is not necessarily a harmful condition. One possible side effect of excessive vitamin D is the triggering of arrhythmias due to the corresponding rise of calcium levels in your blood. However, because several of them may be fatal, if you suspect that you may have taken too much vitamin D, and notice changes in your heartbeat, you should not ignore this symptom.
